On the inside, the only thing sweet was the sugar that filled my belly from my sugar addiction – the candies, cookies, brownies, cake, and ice cream.
To me, there was nothing wrong. It wasn’t the sugar or anything else. There was simply something going on that I would suffer with for the rest of my life.
Health or the lack of health doesn’t always show itself. From the naked eye, you would have never even thought that I was suffering. I’m not a complainer, and so none of my friends or family were aware that I was suffering in silence.

I think about my grandfather who was diagnosed with a rare cancer the day before his death. He had been silently suffering with toxic burden, and for how long, no one knows!
It’s interesting now that I’ve experienced my silent suffering, I can see it clearly in the people I interact with.
Today, I watch people with their energy-depleted faces. I physically see toxic burden on their bodies and the pain in their eyes. I hear their hurt in their words. And I can see their suffering through their tough exterior.
It’s a gift I gained through my silent suffering.
The thing is, you don’t have to suffer in silence anymore.

So, how do you get out of this silent suffering cycle or toxic burden overload? I spent many years throwing every supplement I could possibly get my hands on at many of the symptoms I was experiencing, hoping to get well.
I call this a hodgepodge approach now.
Fighting symptoms with supplements is no better than fighting them with medication.
We hear a lot about root cause analysis in today’s health and wellness world. The truth is, we may not always know the exact root of a person’s illness. Why is this?
We come into contact with stressors on a daily basis that may or may not push us over the edge enough to drive a disease process. It is my experience that a major life stressor can be the turning point for someone when it comes to illness. Major life stressors might include moving to a new city, changing jobs, growing your family, divorce, or a death in the family.
So how does all this work?
Those who want to heal the body naturally from the inside out would likely work on things like detoxification, gut healing, and hormone balance.
In the event that cleaning up a person’s environment doesn’t work, then I, or other wellness practitioners, will do a little more detective work.
This usually happens when we discover that there is an environmental culprit preventing the disease process from healing. For example, this could look like constant exposure to mold or allergens in a person’s environment. It can be viral infections, parasites, or any number of other invaders.
The key is to expose the culprit when possible – that is where the detective work comes in.
Cancer & Toxic Overload
The C-word – cancer – is one that seems to creep into our lives. I recently lost my grandfather due to cancer. Like I said previously, he silently suffered for a long time. I’m sure of it. He even seemed to be in severe pain last time we were together.
As my family is recovering from this loss due to cancer, here are some things that I want you to think about today.
Cancer is Preventable
Did you know that we can prevent cancer if we live a life of health? I also don’t imagine that cancer has to be a death sentence, although many people do die from it.
“More people live off cancer than die from it.”
Our bodies are in a very acidic state as a whole. We also lack nutrients, are depleted in our hormones, in toxic overload, and are bogged down with life stressors.
Did you know that when many oncologists are interviewed they say they would not subject themselves or their family members to the same treatments they give their patients?
Isn’t that a shocking statement?
The truth is, whether it’s cancer, autoimmunity, diabetes, or high blood pressure, treatment with medications is no fun.
What if you could prevent diseases like this though?
What if basic lifestyle adjustments could actually be what would bring the body back into balance so these symptoms and the underlying disease could clear up?
Would it be worth it to you to give up those sodas and drive thru window meals to get rid of some of the things that are preventing you from feeling your best?
Thomas Edison – the inventor of the light bulb and – once said, “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will educate his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.”
Edison had a good point – prevention is the best medicine. But there’s an issue with his statement. Many don’t think anything is wrong with them until they feel unwell. As a health and wellness practitioner, I see more people that are feeling less than their best and less people who want to prevent disease. When they come to me, they are too far in their disease to bypass some sort of preventive medicine or natural intervention.
It’s time to tune in to your body’s signals.
As someone who believes that God provided everything on this earth for our wellness, my methods include course correction and working with natural substances (or supplements), which in my experience, gives individuals a whole new life.

Using Medicine for Healing
I desire to see others thriving and well – not just managing their symptoms. When I was studying to become a nurse, I never realized I would learn so much about what I didn’t like about conventional medicine. Let’s take a look at how to use conventional medicine and God’s medicine for healing.
I realized my patients were just like me – suffering with no end in sight without some medication to mask the symptoms, surgery to explore a little further, or remove an organ that had failed.
I knew from the very beginning this type of treatment didn’t resonate with me.
What I didn’t realize at the beginning is that I had a choice, and so do you.
It was when I became sick that I started looking for treatments outside of conventional medicine.
Before I go any further, please hear me loud and clear… I believe there is a time and place for conventional medicine. But I also believe that the “pill for the ill” world we live in has us in a heap of trouble.
Did you know (at the time of this writing) the 3rd leading cause of death is medical error? That’s shocking to say the least!
Why do we continue to trust in man’s medicine over God’s medicine? Everything we need to heal our bodies has been placed on this earth in nature. The medicines we need are found on the earth, and their leaves are to be used for healing (Ezekiel 47:12).
“And on the banks, on both sides of the river, there will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither, nor their fruit fail, but they will bear fresh fruit every month, because the water for them flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for healing.”
I see this type of medicine work every day of my life.
I watch people with chronic illness transform before my very eyes – people who have been on prescription medications for 20 years suddenly heal their bodies naturally. Plus, they don’t need their prescriptions anymore.
I’ve watched countless clients be released from their doctors care, not because I told them to, but because the numbers on their lab tests literally reversed after implementing natural healing methodologies.

If you’ve been stressed recently (a divorce, a big move, an illness, or a loss), it can negatively impact your adrenal health. It’s time to slow down and rest a little to recuperate. Listen to your body. There are herbal mixtures that can bring healing to your adrenals and rescue you during those high stress times. One of my favorites is a simple amino acid called l-theanine.
3. Adjust Length of Workouts If You’re Exhausted
Exhausted after your workouts? Complete exhaustion after a workout is your body’s signal that you’re doing too much and pushing yourself too hard.
This is especially common in individuals workout out for over an hour a day. Adjust the lengths of your workouts to shorter increments until you feel more energized.
Not everyone is in a place physically that they should push to the max on a daily basis. Learn to rest when your body is telling you it’s exhausted.
When we declutter our lives, we declutter our minds.
4. Create a Bedtime Routine
If you feel wired before bed and feel like you can’t fall asleep easily, it’s time to pay attention to your bedtime routine.
We enforce bedtime wind-down with our children, but we quickly dismiss bedtime routines as adults. Turn off technology an hour before bed, take a warm bath, read a relaxing book, and prep a healthy lunch for work for the next day.
Do something to chill out.
5. Take a Breather
Stressed at work? Maybe you need to walk away and take a breather. Literally, walk away and do some deep breathing. I call this “box breathing.”
Breathe in 4 counts, hold 4 counts, breathe out 4 counts, hold 4 counts.
Repeat this for at least 1 minute and work your way up to longer periods over time.
Work to fill your belly, not your chest, with air. This will calm your nervous system. If you do this on a regular basis, you will find that you’re naturally more calm during stressful times.
These are a few ways you can tune in to your body to give it what it needs throughout the day.
Stress is a driver of disease.
As a nation, we are chronically stressed. Stress is not only emotional, but it is chemical, physical, and even goes on inside our bodies. It can be a fight with our partner, a bad work relationship, traffic jams on our commutes, eating inflammatory foods, and even illness in our bodies.
Think about the things you come in contact with on a daily basis that your body perceives as stress. I encourage you to slow down on a regular basis.

Families gather around the table for a full feast. We attend back-to-back Christmas parties which, of course, have tons of food. 7 Tips on Staying Healthy During the Holidays
This wouldn’t be a Chelsie Ward Wellness blog if we didn’t talk about looking at health from a holistic approach. These 7 tips on staying healthy during the holidays focus on the whole body – mind, body, and spirit. Our goal is to coach you to honor your body during this Christmas season.
1. Get a Good Night’s Sleep To Better Handle Stress
There’s no doubt that with all the Christmas parties, errands, and family gatherings that the holiday season is exhausting. To add to that exhaustion, you are exposed to unhealthy foods, family stressors, and eating too much sugar. All of that impacts your energy levels. If staying healthy during the holidays is a priority of yours, then you need to get a good night’s sleep to better handle the stress.
While this tip is a short-term solution for the holiday season, getting sufficient sleep directly correlates to your health in the long run. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, insufficient sleep has links to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and decreased immune function.
2. Take a Walk Early In The Morning
Even if exercise is on the backburner during this season, your body still needs to move. Take a walk early in the morning before you travel or spend time with family. You’ll be less likely to indulge because your body has already been energized by the activity. You won’t be reaching for that extra piece of peppermint bark or the next cup of coffee to keep your energy levels high.
3. Focus On Low Intensity Exercise
If you want to continue your exercise regimen through the holidays, focus on low intensity exercise. High intensity exercise can actually add to the stress and cause more weight gain during the holidays.
4. Add Appropriate Supplements Into Your Diet
The holiday season can cause ruin on the body, especially with the average sugar intake spiking. We’re consuming foods that are causing imbalance in our gut. Supplement appropriately to suit your body’s needs.
There are a couple options to add appropriate supplements into your diet. First, you can take a full spore based probiotic and multi-vitamins to round out your diet and give your liver extra support for the toxic burden that holiday festivities may bring.
Deep breathing and meditation is often overlooked because mental health often isn’t valued as much as physical health. But this practice can help you destress, stop anger or rage from turning into something you’ll regret, and ultimately make you happier.

Feel better? You can do this for a couple minutes at a time and then work your way up to longer periods of times. This practice will help shift your nervous system into a relaxed state.
When can you do this? Just about anytime. To start, I suggest you practice deep breathing when you wake up, feel stressed, and/or before meals to help digest your food.
6. Spend Your Valuable Time With Positive Relationships
There’s a direct correlation between relationships and your health. When we’re surrounded by toxic people, we start thinking toxic thoughts. Toxic thoughts become actual toxins and impact us physically. We resort to coping mechanisms such as emotional eating or avoidance of supporting people.
Pick a few people that energize you and give you joy. Stick close to those people, especially when you’re going to be around those toxic people. If you need to step away for a few moments to practice your breathing, do so.
7. Declutter as You’re Cleaning
Christmas is now over, and you’re taking down all the decorations. This is a perfect time to declutter as you’re cleaning and repacking those Christmas decorations. Throw out anything broken or not serving a purpose anymore. When putting back your living space to the way it was before, evaluate if the way you had before stressed you out or brought you peace and comfort. As you bring in the new and put away the old, Marie Kondo your home. Get rid of things that no longer serve you or give you joy.
When we declutter our lives, we declutter our minds.
It’s Your Choice To Be Healthy
In conclusion, you have a choice to make. Are you going to settle into old, unhealthy habits over this holiday season? Or are you going to work towards staying healthy? It’s your choice.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One of the most
powerful tools when it comes to breast cancer is PREVENTION. Two keys to
prevention are micronutrients, and open detoxification pathways. We can prevent
tumors by providing the body with appropriate micronutrients, and we can repair
cellular damage by daily detoxification.
You may have heard the term “estrogen dominance.”
It’s one of the common hormone imbalances people experience today. It’s a
common cause of PMS, fibroids, infertility, and symptoms of menopause that we
assume are a normal part of life. We also see problems with estrogen in men
that can lead to prostate cancer, weight gain, and low libido. Thousands are
struggling with this today and don’t even know it. There are many symptoms associated
with estrogen dominance, but breast cancer is one of those. It is often caused
by the body’s inability to detoxify estrogen appropriately.
Estrogen is essential in the body. It’s important for
reproductive health, skin, bones, and even contributes to us psychologically.
When it’s in the body in excess, it can be converted into dangerous metabolites
that cause DNA damage or drive specific cancers in the body.
Estrogen dominance is a problem today because we’re exposed
to xenoestrogens and many other chemical estrogens in our environment. These
cause disruptions in our endocrine system which lead to excess hormones in the

Cosmetics and personal care products
are a big source. Things like shampoo and conditioner, makeup, body lotions,
and perfumes have endocrine disruptors. This is not only true for estrogens,
but also progesterone. Many of those lip plumpers or wrinkle reducers have
hormone disruptors in them. I use an app called Think Dirty
and it allows me to scan my personal care products to get rid of the ones that
have known endocrine disruptors.
Household cleaning products, air
fresheners, candles, and other fragrances we use in our homes can also disrupt
our hormones. You can use the EWG app and begin to switch some of your toxic
cleaning products with non-toxic versions.
Plastics are another big source.
There was a big movement to remove plastics from our home that contain BPA. The
problem is that BPA is not the only plastic hardener out there that disrupts
our hormones. So be careful purchasing bpa-free products because that doesn’t
necessarily mean they’re safe. Many of these products have been replaced with
other plastic hardeners such as BPS, which is even more toxic than BPA. Work
toward removing plastics from your home and use glass drinking bottles and pyrex containers, especially when using them
to heat foods or beverages.
Xenoestrogens can also be found in
our food. The best way to avoid these endocrine disruptors is to eat organic
foods that are free from pesticides and herbicides. Also, purchase grass-fed or
pasture-raised meat that is not fed hormones or antibiotics. Consuming cleaner,
organic, and local foods increases your vitamins and nutrients, which is
another way to prevent cancer and other diseases.
Doing small things every day that help limit your exposure
to hormone disruptors can make a huge difference in the prevention of cancer
and disease. Another way you can keep estrogen metabolism working for you and
your body is to make sure that you have key micronutrients on board. Things
like magnesium, vitamin B6, vitamin B3, vitamin A, and cysteine are key
nutrients for hormonal health. Lacking proper nutrition sets the stage for more
serious illness like cancer to invade the body.
One of the tests I love to run is a micronutrient panel,
which gives me guidance around whether or not I need to take steps to correct
imbalance. Another great test for determining excess estrogen or an imbalance
in hormones is the DUTCH test. This test can give insight into whether or not a
person is estrogen dominant, or if a person is preferring a detox pathway that
opens them up for DNA damage or a greater potential for cancer. These are great
tests that allow us to take a peek inside the body and make corrections before
a disease process begins.

Every person is unique, inside and out. And there are many
things that affect our own personal nutritional needs, including age,
lifestyle, metabolism, prescription drug use, illnesses, and whether or not a
person is even absorbing nutrients. Cleaning up the body and repairing cellular
damage is a great way to prevent hormonal imbalance that can lead to things
like breast cancer and other disease processes.

Speaking of mammograms, thermography is actually a safer,
painless, and more accurate alternative. Thermal imaging is a diagnostic
technique that allows for early detection. While detection is an important
part, the key is that we know how to reduce toxins from our environment that
are contributing to breast cancer and other diseases.
We talked about some of the ways you can reduce your
exposure to cancer. These are great tools to help you reduce the risk factors
so you can decrease your chances of ever getting cancer.
Cancer doesn’t happen overnight. We talked about some of the
risk factors like heavy or painful periods, fibroids, weight gain, and
infertility. Other things to consider are, ovarian cysts, adult acne, chronic
fatigue, or autoimmune conditions. If you’re suffering from any of these things
or have a history of breast cancer in your family, or a history of a diet high
in processed foods, something like the DUTCH hormone test could be beneficial
when it comes to prevention.
The awesome thing is, even if you have a genetic
predisposition, you don’t have to be another statistic. You have a choice to
take your health into your own hands.

When we find something that truly drives us, and we know why, then we can set our focus on getting there, and the rest just kind of happens. That’s exactly what happened with me. Today I want to start from the beginning and tell you a little bit about why I do what I do.
I grew up on a typical Standard American Diet, however, my family was blessed with fresh farm foods, straight out of my grandparents garden. Like many of you, I also snacked on a lot of those fast food items growing up, like candy bars and sodas. I loved a good Snickers bar.
My symptoms of sickness actually started when I was a child. I remember my mawmaw looking at me one day and saying, “child you get every sickness that comes down this family line.”
What was she talking about?
Blood sugar issues, inability to pay attention, gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, nausea after meals. These were just some of the things I was experiencing as a very young child.
To my doctors, these things were called IBS, hypoglycemia, and ADD. This was me in grade school. The older I got, the more diagnoses I received. In college, my doctors called it depression, anxiety, hypothyroidism, and then came the dreaded perimenopause at age 29. Now all of these were just diagnoses, not to speak of the symptoms that actually came with them.
Migraines that lasted sometimes a month with no relief, chronic fatigue that would land me on the couch for a daily nap, sugar addiction, hair loss, stuttered speech, foggy thinking, poor memory and concentration, chronic pain and inflammation, acne… the list goes on. This list kept growing and growing, year after year, with no end in site.
I decided that I would not live like this forever. I made a decision to get well, no matter the cost. I didn’t care how much time, money, effort, or pain it took. I was determined. One of the things I ask anyone who comes to me for advice on health today is, “rate yourself on a 1 out of 10 – how committed are you to living symptom-free, or as close to it as possible?” When you’ll do anything to change your current circumstances in your health (or any area for that matter), then you’re ready. It’s unfortunate, but I’ve had to turn people away who weren’t committed to making the changes needed to live in health.
What many people don’t tell you is that for some people, it’s hard work. When I started looking at what it would cost me to get well, I never worried about the finances- and we weren’t rich. It was everything I felt like I was giving up to get there. If the truth be known, that’s probably why I stayed sick for so long. I wasn’t ready to be well. I see people in that same place every single day, and it saddens me.
As a nation, we are getting sicker every year. How is that, when we’ve advanced so much in the field of medicine? I imagine it has a lot to do with the fact that we’re relying on big business to tell us what to put on the end of our forks, and what pills to take for our ailments.
We’ve forgotten the simple principles of healthy living, but another missing component is that there is so little education on the amount of toxins in our environment and in our food that we aren’t even aware of what we’re doing to our bodies to cause them harm. We’re also not educated on how to get rid of these toxins once our bodies become sick and diseased because of them.
What can we do about it?
On my journey to health, I learned that many of the chronic ailments we deal with on a daily basis can be taken care of by getting back to the basics of healthy living as our ancestors did, and implementing protocols that help us rid much of the toxicity we bring in on a daily basis, not only in our physical bodies, but in our minds as well.
It’s important that we begin to take an active role in our health instead of letting someone dictate how it should look for us. Our bodies are intelligent, but we were never intended to live on chemicals and call it food. Our convenience driven society has us in a place of sickness, and it’s my greatest desire for you to understand that you don’t have to stay there forever.
Hippocrates said it well, “if someone wishes for good health, one must first ask oneself if he is ready to do away with the reasons for his illness. Only then is it possible to help him.”
In the book I wrote, Healed His Way, you’ll find many of the same resources that I used to heal my body naturally, the way God intended. I use those same healing principles with the clients I work with today. They can work for you too.
It starts with you. You have a choice to bring health and healing into your own body. You make those decisions every single day, whether you realize it or not. When you’re ready to heal, your teacher will appear.
I’d like to share with you a recent testimony from a client so that you understand how simple this process can look. My client is very similar to me. She came to me at age 22. I fell in love with the idea of helping her, because it was about the age I was when I started feeling my symptoms kick into high gear. When she came to me, she was looking to relieve what she called, “period episodes” right before her menstrual period began. Short story… This was so severe for her that she got so physically ill that she would pass out and even ended up in the hospital the week before we started working together.

I was at a conference last year, and was asked to write out my BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) in one sentence. This was to define who I was and what I wanted to bring to the world. As I thought about that, I was reminded that it would take effort in setting small goals if I ever wanted to come close to that BHAG that seemed so far away.
As I think back to my health journey, I’m reminded of a few
things I thought about along the way as I was looking for healing.
Have you thought about what you want the “end picture” of
your health to look like?
What is health to you? And… is that different from
When I began my quest to better health, I started looking at
the difference between health and wellness, and I put those into my own words
and thoughts before determining my end goals.
The definition of health is the state of being free from illness or injury; a person’s mental or physical condition.
My personal definition of health is being able to have energy to do what I want to do, freedom from medication, feeling good inside and out. It’s without symptoms like hair loss, pain, fatigue, acne, stomach pain, constant nausea, exhaustion (which were a few of the things I experienced on a daily basis).
How is that different from wellness?
The definition of wellness is the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal.
My personal definition of wellness is being able to enjoy my life because I’m living free from any form of sickness and disease.
But as I began my journey, I realized that my experience was
taking me to a deeper level. It was more than health and wellness. I wanted to
be made whole.
Wholeness means being complete and harmonious. It is a place of unity; a state of being unbroken or undamaged.
To me, this encompasses the entire person – mind, body, and
spirit – bringing it into alignment. It’s having balance not only in my
physical body, but in my mind and emotions as well.
So this is the goal I set out to find for myself – and this
is what I want for you too.
The Basics of Goal Setting
One of the first things I did was set these goals right from
the beginning. If we have no idea what we want, then how are we going to
achieve it? If we can’t answer these questions then how can we ever expect to
reach our fullest potential? Without goal-setting, we are doing nothing more
than blindly building.
Many times we don’t get what we want because we simply don’t
know what we want. We’ve never defined our life goals or what success looks
like. Many times we dream about things and they turn to wishful thinking
because we never back them up with a plan.
I believe that vague goals bring us vague results. Are your
goals so vague that you really have no way of knowing whether or not you’ve
achieved them? Sometimes it’s our lack of faith in ourselves that prevents us
from going out on a limb and laying our truest desires on the line. Maybe we’re
afraid we won’t achieve them, but if we don’t lay them out, we never give
ourselves a chance.
Get Specific When Setting Goals
The more faith we have in our ability, the more specific we
will be. And the more specific we are, the more likely we will achieve. If our
goals are not specific, then we are robbed in the end. We never know if the
result could or would have happened. Well defined goals give us an opportunity
to envision our future. When we envision our future, we can work to bring it to

than we imagine, but change will come, and many times it’s even greater than we
What Are You Going To Do?
So I ask you today, what are you willing to do for you? You
need to answer that question and clearly spell it out. If you can’t answer that
question, stop reading. Quiet yourself and get an answer. The cool thing is, as
we grow, this answer will change. If you’ve been chasing the same goals year
after year, then you’re not growing. Eventually, your goals should look like a
moving target, but you have to start somewhere. Why not right here, right where
you are, right now? Define your dream, spell out your goal, claim your victory.
So many times we don’t get what we want because we don’t know
what we want.
Then there comes the big question. Why? Why do you want to
even achieve these goals?
When we answer the what and the why, the how will likely come
If you’re struggling to reach your goals, then I encourage
you to take action today. Truly sit down and begin to ask yourself the hard
questions. Why are you truly stuck? You may be shocked to find the truth. But
in finding the truth, you will find Freedom.
