4 Simple Ways to Naturally Reduce Inflammation

4 Simple Ways to Naturally Reduce Inflammation

You’ve likely heard how inflammation can negatively affect your health, but I bet you haven’t really thought about the role it’s playing in your current health situation.

It’s sometimes referred to as a silent killer, and has a bad reputation, but inflammation is not necessarily always a bad thing. It naturally occurs in response to injury and is helpful when you get hurt or even if you over-exercise. It’s a healing response to injury that protects and heals.

The big problem is chronic inflammation that comes as a result of the amount of stress your physical body is under on a daily basis. Under the wrong conditions, your body has a difficult time healing and can lead to symptoms caused by this inflammation like:

  • Constipation
  • Bloating
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Brain fog
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Sluggish thyroid

While inflammation does play a major role in the development of chronic diseases, the great news is, we can control chronic inflammation through lifestyle and daily behaviors.

A few simple ways to naturally reduce inflammation:

1. Focus on whole food nutrition

Toss out the processed and packaged foods that are filled with sugar and non-food ingredients. Gluten, dairy, sugar, and hydrogenated oils are 4 of the most inflammatory foods. Replace these with healthier alternatives anytime it’s possible to begin naturally reduce inflammation in your body.

Opt for more nutrient dense foods like pasture-raised meats, wild-caught fish, organic fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Snack on fruit and vegetables and fill your plate with lots of color.

Great anti-inflammatory food sources that naturally contain antioxidants include oranges, red bell peppers, kiwi, avocados, sunflower seeds, tuna, halibut, grass-fed beef, blueberries, blackberries, and acai. Sulforaphane rich foods are also an excellent source and include vegetables such as broccoli, broccoli sprouts, and foods in the cabbage family.

2. Add herbs and spices to your meals

Spices not only add flavor, but they have great healing properties. Once you remove the inflammatory foods, you can add antioxidants to help protect your body from cellular damage.

Using antioxidants to clean up internal damage can help boost your cellular health and that means you have more energy, you feel stronger in your body, you improve your mood, and your brain works better.

This can be as simple as adding antioxidant rich spices into your food. Those are things like turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, cacao, and oregano.

3. Make sleep a priority

Aim for a 10 p.m. bedtime. Your body runs on a circadian rhythm, which is around the sun. You release the most melatonin starting around 10 p.m. And your liver and organ repair starts shortly after.

Deep sleep is responsible for making sure you feel fully rested when you wake up, and it occurs early in the evening.

REM sleep makes up the last 4 hours and it’s when your body focuses on the mental and emotional aspects of healing.

A solid bedtime routine will help set you up for successful sleep. Wind down by using softer lights or lamps instead of bright overhead lighting. This will mimic the natural going down of the sun. Turn off your technology and devices 1-2 hours before bedtime since artificial light can disrupt your sleep.

Take a few moments before bed to process your day and take note of a few things you’re grateful for so you can fall asleep in a more joyful state.

If tomorrow’s to-do list is already running through your mind, keep a notepad beside your bed to jot it down and let it go. It will be there tomorrow when you rise.

4. Spend time outside and move your body

Outdoor sunlight and fresh air helps you reset your circadian rhythm and helps you soak up vitamin D. Weather permitting, find an outdoor hobby you enjoy. You could go hiking, walking, swimming, kayaking. When weather is not permitting, bring nature indoors by using plants and stretch out on a yoga mat.

Nature has its own immune system and within a few hours of being outdoors, you can boost your immune systems for up to 30 days.

Nature also reduces stress, which is closely linked with reducing inflammation and the symptoms associated with it. Make outdoor activity a priority for a few hours per week to reset your mind and body.

When you pair daily movement with time outdoors, you will significantly improve your mood, reduce pain, increase energy, and reduce stress, which will greatly impact your overall health and reduce inflammation.

So before you pop another anti-inflammatory, give these a try.

If you’re looking for a straightforward approach to improving chronic conditions such as thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, extra body weight, or other digestive issues and hormone imbalances, research shows that working to naturally reduce inflammation in the body is a great way to improve the quality of your life and health.

Fallacy of Approved Medical Protocols

Fallacy of Approved Medical Protocols

Your body is an amazing piece of machinery.
It’s composed of mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical components that are all interconnected.
You may not be able to see how amazing your body is right now because you’re suffering. Instead, you may see a picture filled with prescription drugs, specialists, and treatments offered by caring medical professionals.
The problem and the fallacy of approved medical protocols is that these medical professionals are not viewing you as a whole person.

Where We’ve Gone Wrong: Not Seeing Our Bodies As Whole

Not only is your physical body not being viewed as a whole by caring and well-intended medical professionals, but they often don’t take into consideration your emotional component. Unfortunately, if your doctor considers the emotional side, they will likely refer you to a specialist, who has little or no communication with your general medical practitioner.
Then there’s your spiritual component. No one in the medical community even starts that conversation or looks down that avenue. It’s almost an alien term to most of the world today; however, it carries a lot of weight in your overall health.
Not seeing our bodies as a whole is why we’ve gone down the wrong path for our health.

Case Study

If you’ve been around here for any length of time, I usually write from a place of positivity and light. However, I wrote this case study from a place of anger, sadness, and disgust.
Over a month ago, a friend went in for a simple one-day procedure. However, days went by where she could not walk, and it was obvious she was being affected neurologically.
She messaged me and told me about her brain fog, constant crying episodes, inability to perform daily tasks, and how humbling it was for someone else to take care of her daily needs.
This was totally unlike her. Before surgery, she was a very independent woman, running a business, and a very successful entrepreneur. This level of function (or inability to function) is now her everyday life. She called her doctor and asked what she should do. They told her to go to the emergency room because she was “likely having a stroke”.
Thankfully, my friend knew that was not the case.

Toxicity From Medicine

What modern medicine doesn’t tell patients is how toxic the medication required for surgery is. As a result, many patients experience toxin burden due to the anesthesia. Medical doctors simply don’t know what effects the toxicity has or what to do about it. They aren’t trained on how to prevent or fix it. They are trained to do surgery – not the follow-up of potential neurological complications.
If your surgery is done by a gynecologist, they have no idea what to do with your brain. So your next step is to visit the hospital again and find a doctor that can help you.
After visiting the hospital, she brought me her lab results. Her liver and kidneys were taxed, her electrolytes were completely off, and even her blood sugar was at rock bottom.
The list of medications from a simple one-day surgery that was pumped into this lady’s body filled an entire page. She was devastated and said, “no wonder I feel the way I do; I was poisoned”. The truth is, she was. And this happens every single day in the lives of so many people.
After a few days of working to detox the body, bind up chemicals, and purge them from the body, my friend’s symptoms began to dissipate. This was not an overnight journey, and there is quite a road ahead for her to reach full recovery, but it is possible when these poisons are purged from the body.

The Fallacy of Approved Medical Protocols

My point boils down to the fallacy of approved medical protocols, where there is no follow-up to do any sort of body cleanup.
Detoxification is critical in moments like this, which is why there is such a need for functional medicine.

Functional Medicine

As a trained registered nurse, I’m not against traditional medicine. But we need to begin to partner together to help our clients/patients heal their bodies and use functional and conventional approaches together to give people the best chance of recovery possible.
As someone working in the functional health space, I witness miracles every day. I watch the health of those I serve (like my friend) radically take a turn for the better.
Unfortunately, a small percentage of people will never encounter this type of work. And many of those who do, don’t take it seriously. No, your insurance will not cover it. Yes, it will require a commitment on your end. And yes, there is an investment of your time, energy, and money.
The omission of practical Functional Health Care is an outright disgrace, yet it is the most effective way to relieve certain conditions. This issue is not one that will change anytime soon.

Big Pharma

Big Pharma spends billions of dollars on the best advertising companies to influence the general population that drugs are the only option for most health issues. But these same drugs have a whole host of serious and harmful side effects. Just listen to a couple of pharmaceutical commercials! Often, the side effects description uses more time in the advert than the benefits of the medication.
What gives me hope is to see a growing population of discerning people who see through the smoke and mirrors of the big Pharma movement.

Looking Outside The Traditional Medical Model

This dissatisfied and discerning group of people are the ones searching the internet, reading books, and taking authority over their own health by looking for answers outside of traditional medical model surgeries and drugs.
Are you willing to be that person?
I realized almost 10 years ago I was willing to give up anything to get well. That is what introduced me to this field. I studied everything I could get my hands on, believing there was a way out of my suffering.
When I started studying, it was like someone turned on a light switch for me. Somehow, I began to view the diagnosis and treatments in a different light. The diagnosis was simply a set of symptoms with a title.
But what was causing those symptoms?
That is the question I began to investigate in my life and the one I investigate in the lives of those I encounter on a daily basis. I can no longer stand to watch people come in with autoimmune disease, obesity, chronic pain, and so many other conditions and not get the help they are so desperately praying for.
My mission is to be that beam of hope.
To dig into the research to find proven answers for these conditions.
I wrote Healed His Way because I felt it was my duty to let people know of my newfound knowledge. The human body is truly amazing when we give it what it needs.

What Are You Missing Today To Put Together Your Health Puzzle?

Over the years, I’ve learned that most of my clients are missing one or more of the following when they finally reach out to me.

  • Failure to address the underlying root
  • Lack of knowledge when it comes to eating right for your specific body type
  • The need to investigate hidden stress in the body
  • Mental and emotional blocks to healing
  • Not having the right mentor and health advocate to help you sift through loads of misinformation

Over the past 16 years, I’ve studied the human body from all these angles to avoid the fallacy of approved medical protocols. If you need help with any of those, I’m here for you. Book your free discovery call today, and reclaim your health!

Loving Your Liver: 10 Clues It’s Time To Detox Your Liver

Loving Your Liver: 10 Clues It’s Time To Detox Your Liver

The liver is oftentimes the organ we forget.

We have all these symptoms, and we don’t think about how our environment impacts it.

So what does the liver do? Often, the liver is called the “grandfather organ”. It’s one of our organs responsible for detoxing our bodies from the things we eat to the air we breathe.

The liver takes on a lot of strenuous duties, which includes processing everyday lifestyle and nutritional choices. Often, the biggest contributor to strain on our liver is not the choices we make, but the toxic world we live in. The air we breathe is filled with toxins from our environment.

Outdoor pollution is bad enough, but what’s worse is the indoor pollution that contaminates your body.

Unfortunately, we are constantly bombarded with toxins in the air. From the cotton clothing we wear that was sprayed with pesticides, to the off-gassing of furniture/carpet/paint on the walls, and to the fire retardant found in our bedding…

Outside of the air we breathe, chemicals and fluoride fill our water systems. While they’re supposed to keep us safe, they fill our bodies with toxins.

The things we eat or drink on a regular basis are filled with pesticides, herbicides, toxic medications, processed chemicals our body was never meant to handle.

These things can create havoc on our detox organs – especially our liver. It’s honestly no surprise as to why so many people are struggling with decreased liver function when you think about all the modern-day stressors and toxins we’re exposed to.

If you ask me, taking care of your liver is one of the most important things you can do for your body. In this blog, I’m going to share how to love your liver by keying into these 10 clues you need to detox your liver (and signs that it may be congested).

Toxic Liver

When you think about a toxic liver, you may not realize some of the things you’re struggling with on a daily basis could be a result of toxic overload in the liver. The more toxins the body is exposed to, the harder the liver has to work to remove them. Unfortunately, our poor liver gets bogged down and is unable to keep up with the demand for detoxification.

Over time, the ability to filter out toxins diminishes. When this occurs, there are many signs that come along with it. Unfortunately, these signs might look like other common health issues and most of the time medical professionals focus on alleviating the symptoms instead of addressing the root cause, which is toxic overload in the body.

10 Clues It’s Time To Detox Your Liver

If you feel like you may have a congested liver after reviewing the signs and symptoms, you will need to work with a qualified professional like myself to help you out. Yes, I know there are liver dedicated supplements that you can take over the counter. And many people reach out to me on a regular basis and ask me if the supplements they are taking for their liver are good. My standard answer after reading a list of ingredients is typically yes. The truth is, there are supplements that support the liver. But true detox is a process that includes specific vitamins, minerals, and amino acids as well as antioxidants to enable the liver can go through a true detox.

If you have more than one of the following clues you need to detox your liver, please connect with me or someone else.

A congested liver will set you up or other disease processes to take place in the body. The beautiful side of that is once you understand true detox and how to implement it in your own life, it is a tool you will be able to keep in your arsenal for years to come.

1. Poor Digestion

One of the things the liver is responsible for producing is bile. Bile is there for digestion and breaks down fats. You want to make sure you have enough bile to break down those fats to get the nutrients you need to be healthy.

If you’re experiencing poor digestion, that’s an indicator you don’t have clean processes to reuse your bile – which helps you consume necessary vitamins. As a result, you’re going to be malnourished and sick.

2. Hormonal Imbalance

The liver is critical in ridding the extra hormones that our body doesn’t need at that time. When there’s a buildup of hormones, you may experience any of the following symptoms:

● High blood pressure ● Bloating ● Weight gain ● Fatigue ● Sleep problems ● Low libido ● Low immune function ● Craving junk food

Many of my clients before working with me brush these symptoms aside. It’s just part of life. What they don’t know is that these symptoms are a result of a stressed out liver.

3. Weight Gain

We often experience weight gain (and can’t keep it off) if the liver is stressed and cannot rid itself of the toxin buildup. In fact, the body holds onto fat as a protective mechanism if it doesn’t feel safe to release those toxins.

If you’re experiencing this symptom, think about your blood sugar imbalance and hormones. They are all interconnected.

4. Skin Problems

If you have toxins building up in your system and your liver isn’t able to process those toxins, then your skin becomes a detox pathway. As a result, your skin starts to clog up, causing things like: ● Acne ● Rosacea ● Rashes ● Psoriasis ● Dermatitis ● Eczema

Many clients come to me asking what they can put on their eczema. But that’s not the problem. The problem is that they have a congested liver. Their skin issues are showing up as a result.

Rather watch an 11 minute video with the same information….

5. Fatigue

Fatigue is a super common problem I see and another clue you need to detox your liver.

But what is fatigue actually?

It’s feeling like you didn’t get enough sleep the night before

You feel like you can’t function properly throughout the day (especially after meals).

There’s not enough caffeine in the world to curtail the effects your congested liver is causing.

6. Bad Breath Or A White Coating On Your Tongue

Stick out your tongue right now. Does it have a white coating on it? If so, that’s a clear indicator that something is going on with your liver.

That white coating actually leads to your bad breath. People often try to scrape the coating thinking that they are fixing the problem. Unfortunately, unless you address the root, the white coating will return.

So why does this happen? White coating on your tongue is a sign that you aren’t digesting your food well. It also shows things like candida or other bacteria overgrowing in your gut. Since the mouth, gut, and liver are all part of your digestive tract, they all play a role in your digestion. A sluggish liver is going to contribute to the white coating on your tongue. It’s all one pathway.

7. Chemical Sensitivities

Do you feel like you can’t stand certain cleaning products and get a headache, anxiety, or irritability when you’re exposed to them? Or do you feel like a lightweight when drinking alcohol? If you said “yes”, you are experiencing chemical sensitivity. This often happens when your body already has too many toxins on board and your liver cannot detox. When you add these chemicals to your system or environment, your liver simply cannot handle it.

8. Cravings

If you’re having cravings for sweet treats or highly processed foods (what you would find in a bag or a box), it can be caused by blood sugar and hormone imbalance. Those are signs that the liver is not functioning well.

9. Gallbladder Problems

The gallbladder and the liver are connected. The liver produces bile. The bile salts are responsible for breaking down the fats. The bile is stored in the gallbladder until it’s needed for digestion. If there’s not enough bile produced, then it’s more difficult for your body to digest and break down those fats.

When the gallbladder isn’t functioning properly (if you still have your gallbladder as it’s often removed), you experience symptoms like: ● Nausea ● Indigestion ● Abdominal bloating

You have an intolerance to fatty foods. You want to get the liver working so it produces enough bile, so that the gallbladder stores bile appropriately, so it’s utilized when it’s required to break down those foods and fats.

Remember back to clue #1, if you aren’t breaking down those fats properly, then you risk being malnourished. That leads you into a whole other ball game. Your body needs vitamins and minerals to operate

10. Pain In The Upper Right Portion Of Your Abdomen

Your liver sits in that upper right corner of your abdomen, underneath your rib cage. Sometimes, it’s going to feel inflamed when it’s congested. And when there’s a lot of inflammation, you’re going to feel pain. That’s an indicator that your liver is enlarged.

Here’s the thing… If you don’t resolve these issues, you may be diagnosed with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). This means you have a compromised liver and need to work on detoxing your liver.

No longer are only alcoholics experiencing this, but other people as well. And it all stems from a congested liver.

Detoxification

The toxic environment that we live in is dumping more and more toxins into your liver. If we’re not working to clean up our physical body, then we aren’t doing it any favors.

That’s why I talk about detoxification so frequently. It’s a common method I use to restore a client’s health. This is not a one-size-fits-all approach to rebalance the liver and the body.

If you’re not getting well, think about what might be the root to your health problems. You’re not going crazy. Sometimes, nutrition and exercise just isn’t enough. The key is getting to the root so you can be happy, healthy, and whole.

Several of these symptoms disrupted my life for many years. I worked on my health and thought I was detoxing appropriately. I actually went through some miserable times with detox. But once I learned how to detox properly, my health drastically changed. If you can’t move the needle in some of the symptoms mentioned in this blog, liver detox could be your simple answer.

Don’t leave this unresolved! It could lead to fatty liver disease. There is good news though! Poor liver function can be reversed using a combined approach of proper detoxification methods and appropriate nutrient support. These methods will greatly assist in restoring function and balance to all the systems in the body.

There is no protocol that is one-size-fits-all to rebalance the liver and your body, so working with a qualified practitioner like myself will give you the tools you need to address your personal health challenges so that you can feel your best again.

3 Stage Framework to Reclaim Your Health

3 Stage Framework to Reclaim Your Health

I want to be transparent with you…

I struggle with consistency.

A lot of people comment or send me messages with some of the following questions:

How are you so consistent with your health?
Do you ever slip up?
How do you have the time to do it all?

Can I let you in on a little secret? It’s not all rainbows and unicorns.

I struggle sometimes and am not consistent.

Yes, even health coaches like myself struggle!

Here’s the thing… Believe it or not, it’s not about perfection; it’s about showing up everyday. Because consistency is the key and maintaining it is very difficult, I developed the 3 stage framework to reclaim your health.

Excuses Busy Professionals Use to NOT Invest in Their Health

When I talk about investing in your health, I’m not just talking about hiring a health and wellness coach like myself. I’m talking about investing in the right foods, the right workout programs or gyms, and in yourself.

Here are the top excuses busy professionals use to not invest in their health:

  1. They don’t have the time. No one has more than 24 hours in a day. If you cannot fit it all in 24 hours, it means you need to reassess what’s important and manage time accordingly.
  2. They can’t give up their will or desire for certain foods. Don’t want to give up pastas, cheeses, alcohol, and other junk foods? Giving up these foods does not equate to giving up on life.
  3. They don’t have the money. We find the money to support what is important to us. Are you willing to stand in line for the new iPhone, order a daily latte at Starbucks, or purchase a new TV because your old one broke? That indicates to me that you’re willing to trade your health for something that will only grant temporary satisfaction.

Difference Between Excuses and Reasons

An excuse is never a reason for doing or not doing something, but a reason may appear to be an excuse. When I work with my clients, I do not accept their excuses. People oftentimes confuse excuses for reasons, so I want to be real clear on the difference.

Excuses are explanations that justify or defend reasoning. They do not hold any strength when tested.

Conversely, a reason is a cause for a decision.

See the difference?

EXCUSE: I don’t have time to commit to my health. I’m too busy with work, taking care of the kids, and am just exhausted at the end of the day.

REASON: Right now, I am prioritizing taking care of my sick mother; consequently, I can only commit to a maximum of 30-minutes a day to focus on my health – exercise, mediation, etc. Once my mother heals, I’ll be able to commit more time.

3 Stage Framework to Reclaim Your Health

I usually hear excuses from individuals who do not have a framework or a ladder to climb out of their pit of negativity. This is why I developed my 3 stage framework to reclaim your health. Although every client has their own unique needs, we use this framework to develop a custom plan for each client and see incredible results because of it.

P.S. If you’re ready to work with me, I can help you. Schedule a discovery session with me to navigate through your journey.

So what are these three stages?

  1. Eat for YOUR body, not someone else’s body. Learn the foods and combinations that serve your unique body, and focus on that instead of what someone else tells you is good for them.
  2. Uncover hidden stressors. We all know stress is bad for us. Until we understand what the source of our stress is, we cannot deal with it.
  3. Master your mindset. Use the most powerful machine on the planet – your brain – to manage your body and your life the way you want it to work out.

Let’s dive into the details!

Framework to Reclaim Your Health

Stage 1: Eat for YOUR Body

The first stage in the 3 stages to reclaim your health framework is to decide to eat for your body. Figure out which foods work right for your body – not your neighbor’s, sister’s, or the TV infomercial guru’s body. When you fuel yourself with the right foods, it functions more efficiently and gives you freedom from cravings. Then, you know you are fueling up your body with the right foods.

I teach a simple method based on your own personal metabolic type that you can use long-term. Counting calories, macros, or weighing your food isn’t sustainable or realistic for busy professionals like yourself. This simple method helps you understand how to balance your plate appropriately so you…

Feel satisfied
Stabilize your moods
Have no cravings
Don’t feel like you’re crashing after meals

When you experience that freedom, it means you’ve balanced your blood sugars well (which balances your weight and metabolism).

There are Alternative Foods for Any Food

Before I became a health consultant and coach, I was a junk food junkie… Bread, cheese, pizza, fries… You name it. I craved it!

But these were the exact things that were keeping me sick.

If you’re struggling to give up foods that are harmful to your body, I totally get it. Now that I’ve been doing this for so long, I don’t have any cravings and have even found replacement foods.

Thankfully, there are now alternatives for everything. You can still have your pasta and tacos; you just have to find the right alternatives that work for your body.

Stage 2: Uncover Hidden Stressors

The second stage in the 3 stages to reclaim your health framework is to uncover your hidden stressors. When I start working with you as a client, I use functional lab tests to evaluate your hormones, immune health, digestion, and detoxification systems. We then discover underlying imbalances preventing you from looking and feeling your best.

Rather watch a 7 minute video with the same information….

These tests allow us to peel back the layers and reveal the root cause of your disease. You’ll understand the why behind certain symptoms – which is much more important than the what.

I recently worked with a couple who were both in their 70s; the husband recently texted me that he feels better than when he was 30! That’s the transformation you can experience when you uncover hidden stressors. You can experience victory in your health journey!

It all starts by tuning into what your body is signalling to you.

Stage 3: Master Your Mindset

The third and final stage in the 3 stages to reclaim your health is to master your mindset. Learn how to honor your body’s needs so it will honor you back. When you master your mindset, you create peace with your past so you can move forward in joy and happiness.

Shifting the way you think about your health and your future is one of the most important things you can do to achieve and maintain health and happiness.

Remember, short-term solutions do not produce long-term results. Shifting your mindset is a long-term solution.

Building a strong foundation from a whole body perspective will give you the total transformation you’ve been longing for in your mind and body.

When I was a hospital consultant, I travelled all around the world – flying every Monday and Friday. It would have been so easy to let my circumstances take over my health journey. And for a while, it did! I felt like I never had enough time and worked myself into illness.

It wasn’t until I shifted my mindset and prioritized my health that I saw consistent change and a move in the direction I wanted to be. Even though I was flying, working 60 hours a week, writing my book, and working on my health and wellness journey, I decided that “I” was “my priority.”

I scheduled and planned everything – including staying in hotels where my room included a kitchen so I could cook my own meals. This choice enabled me to have consistency.

Consistent Routines

Who else lives by their calendar? Following a routine forces you to be consistent, so schedule your routine on your calendar and follow it. If you do not follow it, it will lead to a slippery slope where you begin to create a mistrust in yourself (and eventually self-sabotage).
